Sometimes Sound Is Too Much

November 20th, 2006

It seems we have now long forgotten,

Sound is a language, it needs some grammar and politeness.

It used to be so precious as other treats, like chocolates and ice cream
That you don’t always have it or make it – You have it at the special moment.

‘Cause sound is beautiful and speaks to the heart, you present it in its most appropriate elegance.

Never a nonsense, never a void.

Indeed a spark lighting up the deep Milky Way.

But people forgot the ritual.

Everywhere now is sound – loud and redundant,

As cheep as plastic.

People make sound as much as they like and

at anytime and anywhere.

Commercials, advertisements, honks, and uninvited whistles by your ear.

You want sound to be sacred and enlightening.

Rather than

Sometimes sound is too much.

“The meaning of a word to me is not as exact as the meaning of a color.

Colors and shapes make a more definite statement than words.

I am often amazed at the spoken and written word telling me what I have painted.

Where I was born and where and how I have lived is unimportant.

It is what I have done with where I have been that should be of interest.”

– Georgia O’Keeffe

Very much enjoyed your post on sound – and I completely agree with your assessment of the overuse of sound. I don’t agree with the OKeefe quote however. Sound has as much if not more meaning than color. Just because people have not yet registered the meanings of sound in their consciousness does not mean the meaning is not there. Words have very specific meaning – whether people use the meaning correctly or not – there is a power in the word. Manifestations through the word happen when a person has the power to manifest through the word and the person manifesting needs to carefully choose their words. Am really enjoying your site.
